Designer Spotlight: John Hardy

Designers find inspiration in experiences, encounters, and exotic locales. For jewelry designer John Hardy, inspiration came in 1975 when he traveled to the Indonesian Island of Bali to study Balinese jewelry making. At the time, Hardy was still just a young Canadian art student. He apprenticed with a master Balinese artisan whose family had once served the island’s royal courts as goldsmiths. Hardy’s study of Balinese culture, design, and art lasted many years. It wasn’t until 1989 that he formed the John Hardy company and began to market his unique Balinese-inspired designs.
